Inscription

Charles Newman (1854 – 31 May  1912)

Charles was the eldest son of Joshua and Mary Ann (née North) Newman. His father was a domestic coachman (1861) and gardener (1871) and he grew up at 12 Princes Street.  Charles married Alice Eaden on 1 May 1878 at St. Paul’s Church and they had four children: Florence May (1879-1966), Charles William (1881-), Arthur (1883-1883) and Kate Mabel (1886-1971).  Charles worked on the railway as a porter and after he was widowed lived with his parents at 1 Belvedere Terrace (1891) and 53 Argyle Street (1901/1911). He died at Argyle Street and his funeral was held on 4 June.

Alice Newman (née Eaden)  (1854 – January 1889)

Alice was born in Stow cum Quy and baptised there on 9 April 1854.  She was the daughter of Thomas and Jemima Eaden and grew up on the High Street in Quy, where her father was an agricultural labourer. Aged 17 she was working as a housemaid at 14 Market Street, Cambridge for confectioner William Thurston and his family and died at Coronation Street aged 34 years old.
