Emily Newman (née Ansell) (1855-13 February 1939)
Emily grew up in Great Shelford and was the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Ansell – her father worked as a labourer in a paper mill. She married Thomas James Newman (1855-1900) on 9 January 1879 at St Andrew the Less Church. They had nine children: Elizabeth Emily (1879-1918), Agnes Gertrude (1881-1950), Joseph (1884-1958), Thomas James (1886-1936), Alfred Ernest (1890-), Arthur William (1892-1956) and a further three children who died as infants.
Emily and Thomas raised their family at 6 Blossom Street and Thomas worked as a college kitchen porter. Emily was widowed in 1900 and in 1901/1911 she was still living at 6 Blossom Street with her sons and brother Albert Ansell who was a college kitchen porter. She died aged 84 years old at 133 Catharine Street, the home of her son Arthur.
Elizabeth Emily (Eliza) Newman (1879 – 3 July 1918)
Eliza was the eldest child of Thomas and Emily Newman. Aged 20 she was working as a general servant in the household of Clarence and Helen Bond at 109 Stockwell Park Road in Brixton. By 1911 she was working for George and Frances Haffenden at their house in Montpelier Road, West Ealing. She died at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington aged 38 years old.
