Samuel was born on 20 September 1891 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire. He was baptised on 18 October 1891 at St Andrew the Less, Cambridge. Samuel was the older of two sons born to Samuel Noble (1868-1917) and Elizabeth Ann Noble (née Brooks) (1866-1953). In 1911 he was still living at home at 154 Hill Road, Babraham Dairy, Cambridge. He was working as a hosier’s porter. Samuel married Hilda Emily Phillips (1894-1970) in 1915 in Cambridge. When war broke out Samuel enlisted in Cambridge as Private 26932, Middlesex Regiment. At some point he transferred and became Private G/21187, 7th Battalion, Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment. He was killed in action at the Battle of the Somme on 28 September 1916 and was commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial in Northern France (Pier and Face 5 D and 6 D). He is commemorated in Cambridge on this family grave and on the war memorials at St Paul’s, St John’s, St Mary the Less and at the Cambridge Guildhall.
