Caroline Pateman (c.1862 – 2 February 1937)
It has not been possible to establish who Caroline was. She lived with William Pateman at 51 Hemingford Road from at least 1930 onwards, but no marriage certificate for the two has been found, so perhaps she was a distant relative. She died in Cambridge aged 75 years old.
William Joseph Pateman (c.1863 – 14 June 1937)
William was born in Litlington, a village fourteen miles south west of Cambridge, and three miles northwest of Royston. He was the son of Joseph and Mary Pateman and grew up on the High Street where his father was a bootmaker, grocer and also ran the village post office. By the age of 17, William was also working as a bootmaker. He married Penelope Helena Barbara Brown (1862-) in 1884 and the couple had five children: Minnie Rose (1885-1967), Lily (1887-1976), William Harris (1889-1954) and two children not yet identified. In 1891 the family were living at 75 Great Eastern Street, Cambridge and he was working as a bricklayer by this time. They had moved to 51 Hemingford Road by 1901. In 1911 William was lodging with his brother Albert in Stratford, London and both were working as bricklayers. On the census of that year William was marked as being married, but no records for Penelope Pateman have been found after 1901.
From at least 1918 to 1929 William lived at 51 Hemingford Road with an Ellen Beatrice Pateman (a relative possibly?) and from 1930 to 1937 with Caroline Pateman. He died at home and the executor of his will was his son William Harris Pateman.
