Mary Sutton (c.1796 – 18 December 1868)
Mary was born in Huntingdon and worked as a school mistress. In 1851 she was running a girls’ boarding school on St. Andrew’s Street, which had 23 pupils, 2 teachers and 3 servants. Pupils came from Kent, London, Surrey as well as local girls from Cambridge, Baldock and Melbourne. She taught with her niece Maria and they later ran Llandaff House Girl’s School on Regent Street together. Mary died at Llandaff house in December 1868.
Maria Sutton (7 February 1816 – 21 January 1885)
Maria was the daughter of Mary’s brother George Sutton and his wife Isabella (née Pretyman). She was born in Wheathamstead in Hertfordshire (a village just north of St. Albans) and baptised on 1 May 1816 at the St. Albans non-conformist church. George worked as a miller, and the family lived at Brewbrook Mill in Wheathamstead. In 1851 she was living at Albion House School in Lambeth, where her widowed mother Isabella was running a school. Maria was described as a governess on the census of that year. She later taught with her Aunt at Llandaff House, and took over the running of the school from Mary. She in turn taught with her niece Sophia Petitt and died at Regent Street aged 69 years old.
Sophia Pretyman Pettit (20 January 1829 – 31 July 1896)
Sophia was Maria’s niece on her maternal side, and was the daughter of George and Sophia (née Pretyman) Pettit. She was born in Rotherhithe and baptised at the Walwork Locks Fields Chapel in Southwark on 12 November 1829. Aged 12 she was a pupil at her great-aunt Mary’s school on Regent Street and also became a teacher. She taught at Micklefield House School in Rowdon Yorkshire (1851) and then at May Anne Barker’s school at 1 Regent Terrace (1861). The school later became known as Llandaff House, and in 1881 she was working with her cousin Maria Sutton at the school.
After Maria died the school was run by Louise Moerck and in 1891 Sophia was still living there and was described as a boarder, living under her own means. Sophia died at 23 Clarendon Street, leaving a small estate valued at £22 6s 6d.
