John William Porter (21 October 1871 – 31 July 1953)
Johnwas baptised at St. Paul’s Church on 28 September 1873 and grew up at 3 Eden Street with his parents Thomas and Mary Ann. Thomas was an architect’s assistant and John worked as the same. He married Kate Rhoda Smart (1872-1903) in 1894 and they had four children: May Eunice Mary (1895-1936), John Thomas (1896-), Arthur Alfred (1896-1968) and Stanley Maurice (1899-1980). The family lived at 44 City Road and in 1901 John was documented as a builder’s clerk and architect’s assistant. Kate died in 1903 aged 31 years old and John married for a second time in 1905 to Emma Shallow. He and Emma had a further three children: Ronald Jack (1908-1997), Douglas Bernard (1913-2004) and one further child who died as an infant. They lived at 3 Eden Street (1911 onwards) and by 1939 he was documented a retired council inspector of plans.
Emma Porter (née Shallow) (21 May 1871 – 6 May 1959)
Emma was the daughter of James and Ruth Shallow and grew up at 44 Wellington Street (1881), 7 James Street (1891) and 26 Maids Causeway (1901). James was a labourer in a factory, and later worked as a carman (delivery driver) before opening a grocery shop at Maids Causeway. Emma worked as a mantle (coat) maker before her marriage to widower John Porter. She continued to live at 3 Eden Street after she was widowed but died at the Cambridge Maternity Hospital. She was 87 years old, so it is not known why she was at the hospital!
