In Affectionate Remembrance of THOMAS REYNOLDS d September — 1863 aged 69
Also of SARAH REYNOLDS [relict] of the above ——- November [2] [1874 aged 84
Thomas Reynolds (5 October 1794 – 10 September 1863)
Thomas was born in Godmanchester, the son of carpenter William Reynolds and Ann. He married Sarah and they had at least three children: Mary Ann (1824-), Thomas (1826-) and Charlotte (1830-1890). Thomas was a builder andthe family lived at Fitzroy Street (1841/1851). They later moved to 6 Fair Street (1861) and then Royal Albert Homes, Hills Road (1863). Entrance to the almshouses was held via vote and in April 1863 four places were available. Thomas came third in the vote with a total count of 598. He died at home aged 69 years old and his funeral was held on 15 September.
Sarah Reynolds (1790 – 2 December 1874)
Sarah was born in Halsted and in 1871 was living at 1 Royal Albert Almshouses, Hills Road. The Committee of the Royal Albert Society had held a discussion after Thomas’ death with regard to her position and had ‘unanimously agreed to allow his widow to retain possession of the premises….and after giving her case their careful consideration, they recommend that the benefits of the society be continued to her’. She died at the Almshouses and her funeral took place on 9 December. (The inscription on the monument is incorrect and she died on 2 December, not 2 November).
