Susanna Land Snare (1823 – September 1913)

Susanna was born in Lakenham, Norfolk, the daughter of George Groom Steel (1797-1870) and his wife Julianna (née Lane) (1798-1875). She married Daniel Snare (1822-1869) in Wayland, Norfolk in 1846 and they had at least five children: Isabella Juliana Marianne Maria (1848-1906), Eliza Susanna (1850-1855), Agnes Jane (1854-1933), Laura Louisa (1857-1921) and Rosa Steel (1860-1909). Daniel was also from Norfolk and worked as a coach maker and they went to live in West Ham from at least 1848-1857.  In 1861 the family were living in the Railway Yard, Norwich, where Daniel was employed as a railway carpenter.  He died in Martham, Norfolk in October 1869 aged 47 years old.

Susanna moved to 62 Jesus Lane, Cambridge where she ran a Lodging House (at least 1871-1901). In 1911, Susanna was 86 years old and living with her daughter Laura and her family at 9 Brunswick Walk. She died at 8 Little St. Mary’s Lane (the home of her daughter Laura) aged 90 years and was buried in the All Saint’s area of Mill Road Cemetery on 10 September.

Julianna Steel (née Land) (1897 – June 1875)

Julianna was born  in Caston, Norfolk and was baptised there on 26 March 1798. She was the daughter of Edmund and Susan Lane and married George Groom Steel on 15 December 1818. The couple had at least six children: Jane (1819-1867), Julianna Land (1821-1821), Susanna Lane, Matilda (1827-1865), George Groom (1828-1900) and Charles Edward (1837-1902).

George ran a small holding of 200 acres in Stokesby,  9 miles from Great Yarmouth. In 1851 he was employing 19 men and 5 boys.  Julianna was widowed in February 1870, and she and youngest son Charles moved to Cambridge to live with her daughter Susanna.  She died at Jesus Lane aged 77 years old and was buried in the All Saints area of the Cemetery on 14 June 1875.

Isabella Juliana Marianne Maria Snare (1848 – May 1906)

Isabella was the eldest daughter of Daniel and Susanna Snare and was born in Stratford, West Ham. She was baptised in Norfolk on 14 June 1848.  In 1871 she was living at 62 Jesus Lane and was documented as being an unemployed governess.  In 1891/1901 she was documented still at the Jesus Lane Lodging House and working as a dressmaker.  She died at home aged 58 years old and was buried in the All Saints area of  the Cemetery on 9 May 1906.

Rosa Steel Snare (1860 – June 1909)

Rosa was the youngest daughter of Daniel and Susanna Snare and was baptised in Norfolk on 15 November 1860.  She is also thought to have assisted her mother in running the Lodging House at 62 Jesus Lane, as well as working as  music teacher.  Rosa died at 15 Malcolm Street aged 48 years and was buried in the All Saints area of the Cemetery on 23 June 1909

Susanna’s granddaughter Elizabeth is also buried in the All Saints area of the Cemetery

Winifred Ethel Elizabeth Sparkes (1886 – 1889)

Known as Elizabeth, she was the eldest daughter of Robert Fuller Sparkes  (1851-1919) and Agnes Jane (née Snare) (1854-1933). Robert was a fishmongers clerk and the family lived at King Street.  Elizabeth was baptised at All Saints Church on 22 April and died aged 3 years old. She was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 3 June 1889.

Susanna’s daughter Laura and her husband William are buried in the Holy Sepulchre area of the Cemetery. Their graves have also not yet been found

Laura Louisa Banham (née Snare) (1857 – 20 October 1921)

Laura was born in Stratford, West Ham and baptised in Stokesby, Norfolk on 13 September 1857. She lived with her mother and sisters at 62 Jesus Lane and worked as a draper’s assistant. She married railway clerk William Banham at St. Mary’s Church, Hitchin on 16 October 1882 and they had two sons: Frank Daniel (1884-1970) and Leslie George (1887-). The family lived at 8 Brunswick Walk (at least 1891-1911) and then 8 Little St. Mary’s Lane (at least 1913 onwards). She was widowed in 1917, and died at home aged 64 years old and her funeral was held on 24 October.

William Francis Banham (1851 – 27 August 1917)

William was the eldest son of John (1817-1895)  and Caroline (née Driver)(1821-1881). His father was a tailor and he grew up at 60 Park Street. He started working  in the goods department of Cambridge railway aged c. 12 years (c.1863) and by c.1877 was promoted to railway clerk, where he worked for nearly 40 years in charge at the G.N.R and G.E.R offices on Market Hill. He was a member of the Central Conservative Club.

He died aged 66 years old whilst on a fishing trip to Upware wtih a friend. He was taken ill and Laura was ‘wired for, but by an unfortunate mistake she went to Waterbeach and her hsuband died before she could reach him’. The cause of death was a cerebral hemorrhage, and he was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 30 August.

William’s parents John and Caroline are also buried in the Holy Sepulchre area of the Cemetery. Their grave has also not yet been found.
