Helen Louise Ruse (née Carter) (1882 – 2 June 1952)

Helen was born in Cambridge and is believed to have been the daughter of George and Eliza Carter.  She grew up at 2 Swans Court and later at 15 Willow Walk (1891).  Her father was a house painter/paperhanger and her mother worked as a college bedmaker. Aged 18 she was working as a housemaid to the Rev. Herbert Peck and his family at Hampsthwaite in Yorkshire. The Peck family were originally from Cambridge, which is where the connection came from.  She returned to Cambridge to marry Robert Edward Ruse in 1903.  They had at least four children: Robert Herbert (1903-1972), Blanche Evelyn (1906-1967), Arthur E (1912-1913) and Hilda Beatrice (1914-1999).

In 1911 the family were living at 11 Salmon Lane, Fair Street.  Robert was working as a casual waiter at the time and Helen as a college helper.  Robert Ruse died at Addenbrookes Hospital on 6 January 1917 aged 34 years old.  Helen was living at 48 Gwydir Street in 1939 with her two daughters and working as a housekeeper to William George Shipp, a painter and decorator.  She died at Gwydir Street aged 69 years old.

None of her children married, and all stayed in the Cambridge area.  Her son Robert Herbert Ruse worked as a laboratory technician and died at 48 Gwydir Street in 1972.
