Alfred George Saunders (1846 – 19 March 1933)

Alfred was the son of George and Lucy and was baptised on 18 October 1846 in Yaxley, four miles south of Peterborough. When he was 4  year old his family were in the workhouse in Peterborough, but by 1861 they had moved back to Yaxley where George Saunders was a hawker. George moved to London where he worked in the warehouse of a colonial merchant.  He married Elizabeth Wootton on 15 August 1875 at St.  Stephen’s Church, Canonbury Road in London and they had six children: Elizabeth Mary Anne (1876-), Alice Lucy (1877-), Nellie (1879-1974), Alfred G (1881-), Edith Martha (1893-1957) and one more child who died as an infant.  The family lived in Islington (1881) before moving to Waltham Forest, Essex (1891-at least1911). In 1901 Alfred was working as a storesman in a yeast factory, and was later a van washer in a distillery (1911).  It is believed that Alfred and Elizabeth moved to Cambridge to be nearer to their daughters Edith and  Nellie, the latter had married Frederick Fordham in 1913.  Nellie and Frederick lived at 38 Glisson Road and Alfred died there aged 86 years old.

Edith Martha Saunders (7 November 1893 – 10 March 1957)

Edith was born in Waltham Forest and baptised at St, Margaret of Antioch Church in Leytonstone on 13 August 1899.  She appears to have moved to Cambridge  and lived at 66 Mill Road from at least 1929 onwards.  In 1939 she was working in the kitchen of a Cambridge college.

Elizabeth Mary Anne Saunders (née Wootton) (1854 – 2 May 1934)

Elizabeth was born in St. Neot’s and grew up on Church Lane in the town.  Her parents were Samuel and Rebecca, and Samuel Wootton was a general labourer. In 1871 Elizabeth was working as a nursemaid in the household of Henry and Sarah Sprigg in St. Neot’s before marrying Alfred Saunders when she was 21 years old. She also died at Glisson Road.
