Charles and Vivien were the infant sons of Charles (1844-1916) and Annie (née Hopkins) (1858-1944). Charles was a fellow of Sidney Sussex College, and was Master of the College from 1890 until his death. He served as Vice-Chancellor of the University from 1895-1897 and was a Governor of Eton College from 1896-1909. Charles and Annie had six sons, of which Charles was the eldest and Vivien the youngest.

Charles died at Queen Ann Terrace and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 2 October 1883
Vivien Christian Smith (12 February 1897 – 12 February 1897)
Vivien died at the Master’s Lodge, Sidney Sussex College aged 6 and a half hours old. His funeral took place the following day.
