‘Into they hands’

Lucy Smith (1862 – 23 December 1938)

Lucy was born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire and was the daughter of John and Ann Maria (née Elland). John worked as a railway guard and by 1871 the family had moved to live in Ainsworth Street, Cambridge.  John Smith is believed to have died in 1875 and Lucy’s mother then married widower/fellow railway worker Joseph Turner (1828-1899) in 1880.

Lucy lived with her step father, mother, siblings and step-siblings at 98 Ainsworth Street, and by the age of 18 was working as a draper’s assistant. In 1891 she had moved to live at Swan Street in Loughborough and worked as a confectionery business manageress, before returning back to Cambridge by at least 1901. She lived at 2 Cockburn Street (1901) with her mother and step-sister Ethel, and was documented as being a house assistant in that year.  By 1911 she was living at 9 Earl Street with Ethel and lodger Ellen Newcomb and worked as a ladies outfitter’s assistant.  Lucy died at 10 McGrath Avenue aged 76 years old.
