Solomon Thorogood (1846- October 1905)

Solomon was born in Great Coggeshall, Essex and was baptised at St. Peter’s Church on 1 March 1846. He was the third son of Edward (1806-1868) and Jane (née Potter) (1809-1871) and grew up on East Street, Great Coggeshall where his father worked as a bricklayers laborour. By the age of 15, Solomon was also working as a labourer. In his mid 20’s Solomon appears to have changed his name, and was known as Henry Thorogood, using this name on his marriage documentation, although his death registration used his baptised name of Solomon.

He married Zillah Gardiner  on 9 March 1874 at Christ Church with St. Mary-at-the-Walls Church, Colchester and they had three children: Sarah Kate (known as Katie) (1874-1954), Elizabeth Jane (known as Lizzie) (1880-1924) and Harry (1883-1960).
In the 1881 census 32 yeer old Henry was publican of the Bell Tap, Bell Yard, Chelmsford. He was living there with Zillah – 28,  Katie aged 6, Lizzie aged 3 and a lodger, Arthur Aldous.  He had run the Bell Tap since c.1878, but in September 1881 the licence was transferred to Charles Hart. We know that they were living at 14 Guildhall Place, Cambridge by 1889 as Zillah was witness for the prosecution of a neighbour who had tried to conceal the birth of a child. Solomon’s sister Eliza had married James Gould, who was also from Coggeshall. The couple had also lived in Chelmsford, but by 1881 had moved to Cambridge where James was a fly driver [a form of cab/carriage] – perhaps this inflenced Henry and Zillah to also move to Cambridge. By 1901 the family had moved to  5 Gothic St in Cambridge. Henry was now a cab driver/groom.

He died at 5 Gothic St and his age was given as 53 years, although he was actually 59 years old.

Solomon’s sister Eliza Gould (née Thorogood) (1843-1914) is also buried at Mill Road Cemetery but her grave has not yet been found.

Zillah Thorogood (née Gardiner)  (14 February 1843 – December 1914)

Zillah was born in Kersey, near Polstead, Suffolk and baptised there on 7 February 1847 when she was three years old. She was the second daughter of agricultural labourer George Gardiner (1814-1901) and Sarah (née Smith) (1814-1893). Aged 19 Zillah was living at Church Street, Hadleigh where she was a housemaid to auctioneer Edward Cook. She married Henry Thorogood when she was 31 years old.

She worked as a college bedmaker at Queen’s College from at least 1901-1911, and after she was widowed lived with son Harry at 11 Union Road.  Zillah died at Union Road and her age was given as 65 years, although using her birth/baptism records she was actually 71 years..

Elizabeth Jane Warrington (née Thorogood)  (1878 – 1924)

Elizabeth, known as Lizzie was the daughter of Soloman (Henry) & Zillah Thorogood and was born in Chelmsford.

Lizzie married Percy James Warrington (1877-1961) on April 6th 1909 at St Paul’s church. Percy was a 32 year old  bachelor, 1st Class Petty Officer in the Royal Navy of the HMS Sapphire. He was the son of John (James) Pettit and Elizabeth Warrington and brought up at 47  Bridge St where his father was a college servant, publican and Cab proprietor.

In 1911 Percy was stationed in Portsea Hampshire. Percy survived the the sinking of HMS Hogue at the beginning of WW1 .

In 1921 Lizzie and Percy were living at 11 Union Road, Cambridge with daughters Lily Zillah (1909-1988) and Joan Elizabeth (1914-2000). Percy was now employed at the Portland Cement Company as a maintenance electrician.

She died at 11 Union Road aged 44 ‘after a long and painful illness, patiently borne’ and her funeral was held on 12 December 1924 at Mill Road Cemetery. Percy Warrington moved to live at 14 Orchard Estate, with his daughters and in 1939 was documented as being a plant electrician. He did not marry again and died at 558 Coldhams Lane in Octber 1961, aged 81 years.
