This headstone which stands roughly 25 rows east of the Mackenzie Rd gate and 4 rows south of the south path close to the boundary wall in the parish of St Paul’s is probably now hidden by ivy.

In Loving Memory of ELIZABETH GEORGINA SPEECHLY d May 23rd 1936

The grave register show that 4 other members of this family are buried in the adjoining grave PL45: 

Elizabeth Speechly (née Donkin) (1797 – 6 August  1863)

Elizabeth was born in Darlington, the daughter of Thomas and Hannah (née Pallister) but grew up in Cambridge. She married Charles Speechly on 13 January 1829 in Cambridge and they had at least eight children: Julia (1830-1872), Charles Henry (1832-1882), Edmund Pallister (1833-1833), Edwin (1836-1894), Emma (1837-1929), Claude (1838-1901) and Elizabeth Georgina (1846-1936). Charles worked as a merchant’s clerk and they lived in Peterborough and Oundle until at least 1837 before moving to Cambridge by the time daughter Elizabeth was born in 1846.  The family lived at Annesley Place (1851) and 3 Panton Street (1861).  Elizabeth died at Panton Street and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 10 August.

Charles  William Robert Speechly (1800 –  7 January 1878)

Charles was born in Orton, Huntingdon and was the son of Robert and Susanna (née Allen). He was a corn merchant in Peterborough, but was declared bankrupt in September 1837 and thereafter worked as a merchant’s clerk. He died at Panton Street and his funeral took place on 10 January.

Charles Henry Speechly (1832 – 4 September 1882)

Charles was born in Peterborough and baptised at St.John’s Church, Peterborough on 7 March 1832. He worked as a brewer and married Georgina Schlesinger (1835-)  on 7 July 1859 at St.Paul’s Church, St Pancras. The couple had at least four children: Herbert Augustus (1862-), Elizabeth Annie (1863-1926), Charles Alfred (1866-) and Claude William (1871-). In 1871 the family were living at Hungerford Road, Islington and Charles was working as a ‘store house clerk’. They had moved to 74 Sloane Street, Chelsea by 1881 and he was recorded as an unemployed clerk.  Charles died at 4 Guthrie Street, London ‘after a painful illness’ and was buried at Brompton Cemetery London on 7 September.

Elizabeth (Eliza) Georgina Speechly (1846 – 23 May 1936)

Eliza was baptised on New Years’s Day 1847 at St. Paul’s Church.  She lived with her parents until their deaths, but little else is known about her life. She died at 7 Panton Street aged 89 years old.
