Mary Ann Elizabeth Sussum (née Martin/Coxall)(1834 – 16 August 1898)
Mary was the illegitimate daughter of Sarah Martin, and was baptised in Elsworth on 26 October 1834. Her mother married farmer William Coxall in 1842 and Mary took on his surname. She grew up at a farm on Harston Road, Haslingfield and aged 16 was working as a governess. She married chemist/druggist Frank Sussum on 19 February 1873 in Haslingfield. The couple lived at Frank’s shop at 6 Market Hill (1881/1891) and 11 Station Road (at least 1893 onwards). Mary died at home and her funeral took place on 18 August. Her age when she died was said to be 62 (according to newspapers, death registration documents), 61 according to the grave monument, however it is thought she was at least 63 years old. She was some years older than her husband, which maybe accounts for the difference.
Frank Sussum (22 February 1846 – 26 September 1927)
Frank was born in Cambridge and baptised at St. Clement’s Church on 2 January 1848. He was the son of gardener George Sussum and Mary and grew up at 54 Bridge Street. He worked as a chemist’s apprentice (1861) before running his own business at Market Hill. His is thought to have taken over the business of Charles Orridge and the business was known as Orridge & Sussum. Frank served as an overseer at St. Mary the Great church (1871 – at least 1887) and died at Station Road aged 81 years old.
Frank’s brother George Sussum (1843-1918) was also a promient business man in Cambridge. He worked for hosier Jane Warwicker and ran Warwicker & Co Hosiery after her death. George and his wife Ann are buried at Mill Road Cemetery but their grave has not yet been identified.
