Alfred Taylor (23 May 1861 – 12 January 1904)

Alfred was the youngest of eight children born to John Burdet Taylor (1819-1876) and Mary Ann (née Pigott) (1821-1898). He was born in Sutton, near Ely and baptised there on 18 May 1871 aged 9 years old. His father was a painter/plumber and glazier and Alfred grew up on the High Street in Sutton. After his father’s death he moved to 25 Russell Street with his mother and sister Harriet.  On the 1881 census he was noted as being paralysed.  By 1891 however he was working as a solictor’s clerk and he, Harriet and his mother were living at 22 Regent Street.  By 1901 he was once again noted as paralysed and had moved to 24 Hills Road with Harriet, where he died 42 years old.

Harriet Taylor (1856 – 2 March 1931)

Harriet was born in Haddenham, and was baptised there on 9 September 1860, but grew up in Sutton. She worked as a dressmaker/costumier from the age of 15 onwards, and in 1901 her niece Millicent Taylor was also living at 24 Hills Road and working for her. In March 1894 she was summonsed to court along with four other drapers/dressmakeers for not having an abstract of the Factory and Workshop Act ‘fixed at the entrance of their workshops’.  The Chairman of the Magistrates said ‘they would inflict a fine of 2s, 6d, and costs, in all 5s, 6d in every case. He hoped the public would take this as a warning. These were the first cases of the kind brought up before that court’.

In 1911 Harriet had moved to the Star and Garter Hotel, Dorking where she was working with her sister Emily (1853-1914), and brother in law John Eldred in running the hotel. She died at 13 Eden Street, Cambridge and her funeral was held on 5 March 1831.
