Inscription

Elizabeth Taylor (née Horstead) (17 April 1833 – 7 November 1922)

Elizabeth was born in Ketteringham, near Wymondham in Norfolk and baptised in nearby Hethersett on 19 May 1833. She was the daughter of labourer Thomas and Susan (née Land) and aged 20 was working in Norwich as a servant for the Miller family (1851).  She married Samuel James Taylor (1834-1883) on 9 September 1855 at St. James with Pockthorpe Church, Norwich. The couple had seven children: Herbert Samuel (1857-1935), Mary Ann Elizabeth (1859-1920), Annie Eliza (1860-1935), Emma Maria (1862-1934), Edward Owen (1865-1886), William George (1868-1875) and Ernest Perowne (1870-1927).  The eldest two children were born in Norfolk, but they had moved to 4 Caroline Place, Cambridge by 1860.  Samuel worked as a printer’s pressman and the family later moved to 74 Norwich Street (1871) then 4 Emmanuel Road (1881). Elizabeth was widowed in 1883 and then went to live at 6 Victoria Street (1891) and 12 Parker Street (1901/1911) with daughter Mary and son Ernest. Elizabeth worked as a college bedmaker but by 1911 was running a Lodging House from Parker Street with daughter Mary.  The pair later ran a Lodging House from 24 Parkside (1920).

Elizabeth’s husband Samuel, daughter Mary and sons William and Edward are also buried in the St. Andrew the Great part of Mill Road Cemetery, but their grave has not yet been identified. Funeral reports from Mary Taylor’s funeral in August 1905 reported she ‘was laid to rest in the family grave in St. Andrew the Great portion, where her father and two brothers lay’.
