Gilbert Townsend (1889–1915) was Lance Corporal (768) in the 5th (City of London) Battalion (London Rifle Brigade), London Regiment. He died in action on 13 May 1915 at the Battle of Ypres. He is commemorated on Panels 52 and 54 of the Menin Gate memorial, Ypres, Belgium. He is also commemorated on the war memorials at the Perse School, Cambridge, St Paul’s Church, Cambridge and at the Cambridge Guildhall, as well as on his family grave in this Cemetery.
Gilbert was born on 4 September 1889 in Cambridge. He was the youngest of four children born to William Henry Townsend and Emily Townsend (née Jarrold). He was educated at The Perse School, Cambridge where he was admitted on 14 September 1903. After leaving school Gilbert was employed as a banker’s clerk. He enlisted in London as Lance Corporal (768) in the 5th (City of London) Battalion (London Rifle Brigade), London Regiment. Gilbert died in action on 13 May 1915 at the Battle of Ypres.
