Alfred was born in Poplar and grew up  in Tower Hamlets with his parents James and Maria (née Sampey) and older brother Job. James Turner worked as a  wharf labourer and aged 16 Alfred was working as a messenger boy. He married Louise Jane Wick (1877-1969)  on 23 April 1905 in Canning Town. In 1911 the couple were living in Canning own and he was working as a shipping labourer.  They had one son:  Rupert Louis Alfred (1907-1907) and  eventually moved back to Louise’s native Cambridgeshire.  They lived at 47 King Street, where Alfred died aged 63 years old.
