
Robert Marking White (1892–1916) was Sergeant (13822) in “A” Company, the 11th Battalion, the Suffolk Regiment. He died on 6 July 1916 of wounds suffered while in action at the Somme, France. His death is recorded in Puchevillers British Cemetery (Plot I, Row C, Grave 37) in France. He is also commemorated on the war memorial at St Luke’s Church, Cambridge. His older brother, Harold White, was also commemorated on this family grave.
Robert was born in 1892 in Wood Green, Middlesex. He was the youngest of eight children born to Robert White and Ellen White (née Marking). Robert was a stationer’s assistant. He enlisted in Cambridge and rose to the rank of Sergeant (13822) in the 11th Battalion the Suffolk Regiment. He died of wounds on 6 July 1916 in France. He was entitled to the Victory medal and the British War medal.
