“Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
Emma Williams (née Payne) (1846 – 16 August 1909)
Emma was born in Diss, the daughter of agricultural labourer William Payne and his wife Sophia. In 1871 she was living at The Pightle, Newnham Walk and working as cook for Professor George Downing Liveing and his wife. She married coachman Edmund Williams in 1877 and they lived at 32 Coronation Street (1881), 6 Russell Street (at least 1891 onwards). Emma died at home and her funeral was held on 19 August.
NB It is believed that Emma was born in 1840 and was therefore 69 years old when she died. She was several years older than Edmund, and her age decreased on census records after her marriage!
Edmund Williams (30 April 1848 – 4 June 1916)
Edmund was the son of Edward and Lucy (née Hepher) and was born and raised in Swavesey. His father was a shoemaker and Edmund worked as a groom/domestic coachman. He was lodging at 6 Norfolk Buildings in 1871, prior to marrying Emma. After her death he went to live with his sister Mary Ann, and her husband Richard Prime at 73 Alpha Road, and had retired by 1911. He subsquently moved to Market Street, Swavesey and died there aged 68 years old.
