By 1901 he was working as a draper’s assistant at John Lyon’s store in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire and later went to work at Market Hill in Cambridge (1908). He married Edith Mary Brougham (1868-) at St. Stephen’s Church in Hounslow on 27 June 1908 and the couple lived at 118 Tenison Avenue.
