Sabina Elizabeth Ambrose (née Hazel) (1848 – 22 May 1904)
Sabina was born in Wilburton, a small village six miles south east of Ely in Cambridgeshire. She was the daughter of Joseph and Sarah Hazel, and her father worked as a tailor on Main Street in Wilburton. She married Theophilus Ambrose in Ely in 1870. They had eight children together: William Thomas (1872-1934), Zillah Martha (1877-1949), Minnie Maude (1878-), Sidney Percy (1881-1969), Lilian A (1885-), John Henry (1887-1953) and two further children who died as infants.
Theo worked as a blacksmith, and the family lived at 112 Gwydir Street (1881/1891) and then at 181 Gwydir Street (1901). Sabina died at Addenbrookes Hospital in May 1904 aged 55 years old.
In 1907, three years after her death her children placed an ‘In Memoriam’ in the Cambridge Independent Press which read:
AMBROSE – In loving memory of our dear mother Sabina Elizabeth Ambrose, who passed away on May 22nd 1904. Interred at Mill-road Cemetery.
Rest on, dear mother, thy labours o’er,
Thy willing hands shall toil no more,
No friend on earth like thee we find,
A faithful mother, good and kind.
Theophilius Ambrose (1841 – 5 July 1929)
Theo was born in Hilgay, Norfolk and baptised there on 5th September 1841. He grew up in the village with his parents Thomas and Hannah – Thomas was a Master Blacksmith. Theo followed in his fathers profession and was also a blacksmith.
After Sabina’s death he stayed living in Cambridge until at least 1908, but by 1911 was living back in Hilgay. The census of 1911 records him as living with George and Hannah Forby – George was a dairy farmer. Theo’s profession is documented as a blacksmith. He died aged 88 years old at the Downham Market Infirmary, but was buried with Sabina in Mill Road Cemetery.
