Emma Amps (née Baker) (1848 – 29 April 1924)
Emma was the daughter of Joshua and Ann and was born in the village of Bourn. Joshua was an agricultural labourer, and she grew up at St. Neot’s Road, Bourn. Aged 13 Emma was working as a nursemaid for farmer Joseph Tebbitt at his farm in Barton, and later worked as a cook in Bedford for widow Jane Sheffield (1871). She married Frederick Amps in 1877 and they had five children: Gertrude Annie (1876-1968), Margaret Emma (1878-1966), May (1881-1965), Edward John (1886-1950) and one further child who died as an infant. Frederick worked as a kitchen porter at Trinity College, and they lived at Huntingdon Road (1881), 9 Benson Street (1901) and 43 Mawson Road (1911). Emma died at Mawson Road and her funeral took place on 2 May 1924.
Frederick Amps (12 August 1852 – 31 December 1939)
Frederick was born in Orwell and baptised there on 3 October 1852. He was the son of William and Rebekah and was raised at 8 Brandon Place where his father was a harness maker. After Emma’s death he lived at 48 Tenison Road with daughter May and son in law Thomas Blacktop, and died there aged 87 years old.
May Blacktop (née Amps) (9 April 1881 – 25 September 1965)
May was the daughter of Frederick and Emma Amps and married Thomas Richard Blacktop (1885-1950) in 1909. They lived at 32 Perowne Street (1918), 41 Mawson Road (at least 1932-1937) and 48 Tenison Road (at least 1939-1950). Frederick worked as a builder’s foreman and the couple had two children: Harold Thomas (1910-1983) and Gertrude Ruth (1915-2016). Thomas died at Tenison Road in December 1950 and May then moved to live at 58 Herbert Street. She died at Chesterton Hospital aged 84 years old and was buried with her parents.
