Aged 13 Emma was working as a nursemaid for farmer Joseph Tebbitt at his farm in Barton, and later worked as a cook in Bedford for widow Jane Sheffield (1871). She married Frederick Amps in 1877 and they had five children: Gertrude Annie (1876-1968), Margaret Emma (1878-1966), May (1881-1965), Edward John (1886-1950) and one  further child who died as an infant. Frederick worked as a kitchen porter at Trinity College, and they lived at Huntingdon Road (1881), 9 Benson Street (1901) and 43 Mawson Road (1911). Emma died at Mawson Road and her funeral took place on 2 May 1924.

Frederick was born in Orwell and baptised there on 3 October 1852. He was the son of William and Rebekah and was raised at 8 Brandon Place where his father was a harness maker. After Emma’s death he lived at 48 Tenison Road with daughter May and son in law Thomas Blacktop, and died there aged 87 years old.
