Inscription
In Loving Memory of ARABELLA the beloved wife of WILLIAM ANDERSON who died March 20. 1903 aged 50 years
“Thy will be done.”
Also WILLIAM ANDERSON who died Nov. 7th 1904 in his 80th year.
William Anderson (c.1824 – 7 November 1904)
William was born and raised in Fulbourn. His parents were Edward and Elizabeth Anderson, and in 1851 he was living at home and working as an agricultural labourer. His father was 84 years old at that point and was described on the census as an agricultural labourer in receipt of parish relief. He married Mary Ann Lord [1829-1886] in 1852. William and Mary Ann had at least eight children: William [1849-], George [1853-], Emily Elizabeth [1856-1863], Alice Mary [1859-1873], Elizabeth [1866-], Albert [1868-1943], Emily [1870-] and Louisa Violet [1873-].
In 1861 the family were living at Claypit Green in Fulbourn and William was continuing to work as an agricultural labourer. From 1871 – at least 1891 the Anderson family lived at the Fulbourn Hospital [then known as the Asylum] and William was an agricultural labourer on the farm there. Mary Ann Anderson died in 1886. By 1891 William had married for a second time and was living with her, their son Cyril Harold [1889-1959] and daughter Elizabeth from his first marriage. They were still living at the Asylum Farm. By 1901 he appears to have retired and they were living at 54 South Street in Cambridge – South Street has now disappeared and is where Anglia Ruskin University is sited off East Road. He died aged 79 years old in 1904.
Arabella Anderson (c.1852 – 20 March 1903)
Very little is known of Arabella, and no marriage certificate has been located. She was born in Nottingham and married William Anderson when she was around 36 years old. She died at home at 54 South Street in 1903 aged 50 years old.
