Relationship: Brothers, and one brother’s mother in law

Ann Braybrook (née Clark) (c.1815 – 23 February 1882)

Ann was born in the village of Elsworth, nine miles northwest of Cambridge and was the daughter of William and Elizabeth. She married agricultural labourer Daniel Braybrook in 1840 and they had at least seven children: Hephzibah (1842-1913), Charles (1843-1916), Samuel (1845-1914), Kezia (1848-1936), Mary Ann (1850-), Alfred (1853-1937) and Julia (1856-1933). The family lived at Sandells Lane in Elsworth (1861) and High Street, Connington (1871). After Daniel’s death Ann went to live with her daughter Julia and son in law John Baker at 22 Sturton Street. In 1881 she was documented as a monthly nurse and died at home aged 67 years old. Her funeral was held on 27 February.

James Baker (1851 – 27 August 1875)

James was the brother of John Baker, Ann Braybrook’s son in law. He was born in Bungay and was the son of Robert and Mary Ann Baker. Robert was a printer, but later worked as a harness maker. In 1871 he was living in Bungay with his widowed mother, sister Eliza and brother John and working as a harness maker. He died at Gwydir Street, Cambridge aged 24 years old.

John Baker (1853 – 30 April 1892)

John was James’ younger brother and was also born and raised in Bungay.  Aged 18 he was working as a shoemaker in Bungay, before moving to Cambridge where he married Julia Braybrook (1845-1933) on 22 April 1878 at Chesterton Church. The couple had at least eight children: Helen (1875-), Percy Llewelyn (1879-1938), John Alfred (1882-1949), Florence Grace Braybrook (1882-1960), a son (1883-1883), Julia Laura (1887-), Alice Gladys (1889-1982) and Elsie Beatrice (1891-1983).  Daughter Helen was born before the couple were married and they lived at 22 Sturton Street, where John worked as a shoemaker (1881). By 1891 they had moved to 14 Benson Street, and John was documented in the census as being a rivetter and finisher of shoes. He died at home aged 39 years old and his funeral was held on 5 May.

John’s widow Julia married twice widowed Thomas William Baynes (1845-1926) in 1899. Thomas was a gardener, and they went to live in Bedford, where most of Julia’s children settled.

Infant Baker (February 1883 – 22 December 1883)

The infant son buried in the same grave as his father has not yet been identified. His name was not recorded in the parish burial record. There was a Walter Herbert Baker born in the first quarter of 1883 in Cambridge, but no death record has been found for an infant of the same name in 1883.
