Anne Burleigh (Annie) Bannister (née Shepherd) (1837 – 7 November 1874)
Annie was the daughter of William and Martha (née Grubb) Shepherd and grew up at 54 Eden Street (1841) and King Street (1851). Her father was a boot/shoe maker and her mother was a laundress. Annie trained as a teacher and aged 22 was teaching at the Infant National School in Huntingdon. She married fellow school teacher Henry Bannister in 1872 and they went to live in London. Annie died at 34 Cranbourn Street, Leicester Square. The grave monument and death registration give her age as 35 years, but it is believed she was actually 37 years old when she died.
Martha Burleigh Grubb Shaw (née Shepherd) (1834 – 20 September 1908)
Martha was the eldest daughter of William and Martha and was baptised on 2 November 1834. In 1851 she was working as an assistant housekeeper at Park House and married Charles Shaw (1834-) on 9 August 1854. Charles was a railway goods guard when they married and in 1861 the couple were living in Fletton, near Peterborough. They adopted daughter Annie (1867-1936) and in 1871 were living at 20 Milton Road, and Charles was working as a coal porter by this time. It is not known when Charles died, but by 1891 Martha was a widow and was living with her mother and daughter at 15 Victoria Road. Both Martha and her mother were laundresses and employed others in their laundry business. Martha Shaw (Snr) died in 1891, and Martha died at Victoria Road aged 73 years.
Annie Letitia Shaw Dunn (5 November 1867 – 22 January 1936)
Annie was the daughter of Isaac and Letitia (née Bishop) Dunn. She was born Dudley and baptised at St. Thomas’ Church on 5 January 1868. Isaac Dunn (1841-1867) was a pork butcher who died in November 1867, when Annie was just days old. Her mother was left with five children under the age of eight, and it is thought she was then adopted by Charles and Martha Shaw. She was baptised Annie Letitia Shaw Dunn, so might have already been known to the Shaw family. She worked as a music teacher
After Martha Shaw’s death in 1908, Annie continued to live at 15 Victoria Road with servant Sybil Kettle (1911). She was a member of the Primitive Methodist Christian Endevour Society, and was part of the Society’s ‘sunshine committee’. The committee appears to have visited sick and infirm members of the congregation, and Annie also played the piano for the society. She died at home aged 68 years old.
NB- the name Burleigh was also spelt Birley on some early documentation.
