Monument
This headstone stands in open ground in the parish of St Andrew the Less, roughly 6 rows from the east path where it bends towards the west in the north of the cemetery. The inscription is very clear and the kerb stones appear to be intact though overgrown.
Inscription
In Loving Memory of ALICE MAY BARRON born June 18. 1861. died May 4. 1903.
“Day after day we saw her fade and gently pass away
And often prayed in our own hearts that she might longer stay.
But O she’s gone, forever gone, and left us here to weep,
Till we in turn are called to away within the grave to sleep.
Alice May Barron (née Butler) (18 June 1860 – 4 May 1903)
(NB – Alice was born in 1860, not 1861 and the inscription on the grave monuent is incorrect).
Alice was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Butler and grew up at Cookes Cottages, near Brooklands Avenue (1861), 4 Coronation Place (1871) and 28 Railway Cottages, Mill Road (1881). Her father worked for Great Eastern Railway as a labourer and aged 20 Alice was working as a laundress with older sister Emma. She married James Barron (1856-1933) in 1884 and they had at least one son: William Henry (1888-1966). James was a blacksmith’s assistant and they lived at 110 Gwydir Street (1891) and 11 Cockburn Street (at least 1901 onwards). Alice died at home aged 42 years old (the grave monument gives her age as 41 years) and she was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 8 May.
