Monument
These kerbstones, located in the northern section of the parish of Andrew the Great, are 7 rows along the west path from the centre circle and 2 monuments north. They have been covered in ivy for some years so we have not been able to check the inscription. We do know from the grave register that Harry Augustus and Florence Annie were also buried here or in a grave next to this one.
Inscription
In Loving Memory of ELIZABETH JANE MARTIN
b 15th June 1893 d 1st August 1971 aged 78
Also GERTRUDE ROSE MARTIN d 1st Sept 1974 aged 79
Harry Augustus Martin (1870 – 12 August 1911)
Harry was the son of Nathaniel (1844-1907) and Ann (née Matthews) (1839-1916). His father was a college cook at Sidney Sussex College and he grew up at 60 Burleigh Street (1871), Norfolk Terrace (1881) and 12 Emery Street (1891). By the age of 21, Harry was working as a tailor and married Mary Ann Johnson Lowe (1869-1951) in 1892. The couple had three daughters: Elizabeth Jane (Lizzie) (1893-1971), Gertrude Rose (Rosie) (1894-1974) and Florence Ann (1903-1948). They lived at 163 Gwydir Street, and Harry ran a tailoring business from home (1901). By 1911 they had moved to live at 5 Upper Gwydir Street, where he died aged 41 years old. Harry’s funeral was held on 17 August 1911.
Florence Annie Martin (9 April 1903 – 1 January 1948)
Florence worked as a grocer’s clerk and lived at 5 Upper Gwydir Street with her widowed mother and two sisters. She died at home aged 44 years old.
Elizabeth Jane Martin (15 June 1893 – 1 August 1971)
Known as Lizzie, she worked as an apprentice dressmaker in a shop (1911) and later as a college servant (1939). She lived at 5 Upper Gwydir Street until her death aged 78 years.
Gertrude Rose Martin (3 November 1894 – 1 September 1974)
Rosie also worked as a college servant and lived with her sister at 5 Upper Gwydir Street. She died at the Edwinstowe Nursing Home, Chaucer Road aged 79.
It is likely that Mary Martin is also buried in the same grave set as her husband and daughters. The grave register does not cover that time period.
Mary Ann Johnson Martin (née Lowe) (13 October 1869 – 2 February 1951)
Mary was the daughter of labourer Robert Edward Lowe (1848-1918) and Rebecca (née Johnson) (1845-1939) and grew up on the Histon Road, Cambridge. She was working as a housemaid for widow Caroline Steele at 4 Scrope Terrace before her marriage to Harry Martin in 1892. She later worked as a college servant, and in 1939 was living with her three daughters and noted as a retired college servant. Mary died at Addenbrooke’s Hospital aged 81 years old.
Harry Martin’s father Nathaniel Martin was also buried at Mill Road Cemetery in September 1907, but his grave has not yet been identified.
