Martha Bates (née Dyball) (6 May 1837 – 10 July 1924)
Martha was born in Beeston Regis, near Sheringham in Norfolk and was baptised there on 14 May 1837. She was the daughter of labourer Nelson Dyball and Ann (née Gray) and married Charles Bates at Holy Trinity Church, Paddington on 25 April 1863. Charles was a joiner/carpenter when they married and they had four children: Florence (1864-), Herbert (1866-), Eleanor Mary (1868-1892) and Blanche Clara (1875-1957). They started married life in London, where daughter Florence was born, but had moved to Cambridge by the time son Herbert was born in 1866. the family lived at Bateman Street (1871/1881) and Norwich Street (1891 onwards). By 1891 Charles was working as a builder’s manager/foreman for Messrs. Rattee and Kett, builders. Martha died at 103 Norwich Street and her funeral took place on 14 July.
Charles Bates (1839 – 19 April 1926)
Charles was the son of Nathaniel and Mary (née Hutt) Bates and grew up at City Road, Cambridge. His father was a carpenter and Charles also trained as the same. He worked for Rattee and Kett and in July 1893 the company took their staff to Brighton for the annual workmen’s outing. Three saloons and other carriages left Cambridge at 5.30am, reaching Brighton by 11am. The men lunched at Green’s Restaurant, and after eating ‘the toasts of ‘The Queen’ and ‘Health and Prosperity to the firm of Rattee and Kett’ thanking the firm for their handsome donation, was given by Mr. C. Bates’. The workmen then enjoyed ‘the fashionable watering place’ for some hours before departing at 10pm to make the journey back to Cambridge. They arrived back at 3am and reports of the day said ‘the weather was all that could be desired’. He died at home aged 87 years old.
From Parish burial records it is known that Charles and Martha’s daughter Eleanor is also buried in the same grave.
Eleanor Mary Pritty (née Bates) ( 1868 – 30 October 1892)
Eleanor was the second daughter of Charles and Martha. She married mechanical engineer Robert James Pritty (1864-1938) on 23 September 1891 at St. Mary the Less Church. They lived in Gospel Oak and had a son: Robert Charles Leslie (1892-1983). Eleanor died five days after the birth of her son, probably as a result of complications during child birth. She was 24 years old when she died and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 2 November 1892.
Robert Pritty married again in November 1894 to Jessie Bradley (1872-1956).
