Inscription

ROBERT BAZLINTON born Aug 31 1821 died Aug 24 1881

Also his wife DINAH BAZLINTON born July 1816 died Jan 8 1904

Robert Bazlinton (31 August 1821 – 24 August 1881)

Robert was born in Butterwick in Lincolnshire, a small village 3 miles east of the town of Boston. He was baptised in Butterwick on 1st October 1821.  Robert was the son of John and Ann Bazlinton.  In his early career he worked as a drapers assistant, and aged 29 was living and working at 12 Market Place, Kingston upon Hull (1851).  In 1861 he was an assistant draper to Joseph Kirkham at 82 High Street, Kings Lynn.

He married Dinah Hodson in Misterton, Lincolnshire on 3rd August 1864, and newspaper reports of the time described his as ‘of Glasgow’, so presumably he must have worked there also after Kings Lynn. After marriage he appears to have changed career and worked as a scripture reader and preacher.  In 1871 Robert and Dinah were living at 318 Camberwell Road in London and his occupation was described as a scripture reader.  In April 1881 they were recorded on the census at 22 Macaulay Road in Wandsworth with Dinah’s sister Betsy, and his occupation was that of a ‘retired lay agent’.   Robert died in August 1881 at 2 Kingston Terrace, Mill Road.  The probate records document that he was ‘formerly of 318 Camberwell New Road, Lambeth in the county of Surrey, but late of 2 Kingston Terrace, Mill Road’.  He was 59 years old when he died.

Dinah Bazlinton (née Hodson) (9 July 1816 – 8 January 1904)

Dinah was born in Waddington in Lincolnshire and was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Hodson.  She was baptised in Waddington on 18th July 1816, and grew up at Scottlethorpe Lodge in Bourne, Lincolnshire.   Her father died in January 1841 when she was 24 years old.   Dinah appears to have traveled widely before her marriage to Robert Bazlinton.  In 1841 she was living in Malew on the Isle of Man with her sister Mary. In 1851 she was living in Magdalen Street in Cambridge with Mary and her husband John Egar.  John was a linen draper, and Dinah was recorded as working as a draper’s assistant. In 1861 she was living in Ryde, Isle of Wight and was working as a companion to Ann Samuel.  She married Robert in August 1864 when she was 48 years old.

After being widowed she lived with another of her sisters – Ann Lyon, and her husband Jasper at 75 Mill Road (1891).  After Jasper died, Ann and Dinah continued to live at 119 Mill Road, together with their neice Amelia Egar and a servant (1901).   Dinah died at 8 Emery Street in January 1904 at the age of 87 years old.
