James Warren Root (1832 – 21 September 1899)

James was born in Shudy Camps, to the south of Cambridge on the Cambridge/Essex/Suffolk border and was baptised on 28 October 1832. He was the son of agricultural labourer Samuel Root  (1799-1881) and  Alice (née Warren) (1802-1880) and aged 18 was working at Hall Farm, Withersfield. He married Emma Lindsell in 1861 and they had at least nine children: Eliza (1862-), Mary (1863-), Ellen (1865-1930), Tamar (1867-1944), Sarah Ann (1868-1946), Susan (1870-), Arthur (1872-1944), Walter (1873-) and Charles (1876-). The family lived in Horseheath (1871/1881) and James continued to work as an agricultural labourer.

Sarah Ann Bradbury (née Root) (23 June 1868 – 26 May 1946)

Sarah was born and raised in Horseheath and aged 19 was working as a general servant for farmer Alfred Oakey who lived at Clay Farm in Trumpington. She married Frederick (Fred) Thomas Bradbury (1868-1943) at All Saints’ Church, Marylebone on 26 February 1899. Fred was a railway carriage cleaner when they married and later worked as a  baker, fishmonger’s assistant and labourer.  They lived at 77 Great Eastern Street (1911), but by 1939 Fred was a patient at Fulbourn Hospital and Sarah was living by herself at Great Eastern Street.

Emma Root (née Lindsell) (1837-24 March 1917)

Emma was the daughter of William and Mary and grew up in West Wratting where her father worked as an agricultural labourer. Age 14 she was working as a domestic servant to the Turner family, who lived at Cambridge Place. In 1891 was staying at 10 Cross Street with daughter Tamar and son in law Charles Wallis and was documented as being a nurse. After she was widowed she lived at 75 Great Eastern Street (next door to daughter Sarah and son in law Fred Bradbury) and worked as a needleworker (1901), before moving to live with them by 1911.
