Amelia Brown (1838 – 30 December 1901)
Amelia was the daughter of Edward, although her mother has not yet been identified. She lived with him at 60 East Road and worked as a music teacher (1861) and then as a school mistress/governess. Edward and Amelia raised their niece Agnes Louisa Morgan and the three of them lived at East Road. In Jauary 1871 she had 11 pupils on her roll and appears to have run a school from 60 East Road. After her father’s death Amelia went to live with Agnes and her husband George Patten at 29 Russell Street and died there in 1901.
Edward Brown (c.1800 – 3 February 1886)
Edward was born in Cambridge and had at least two children: Edward George (1837-1855) and Amelia (his wife has not yet been identified). In 1851 he was documented as being a master tallow chandler and collector of highway taxes, and thereafter as an accountant to a soap/tallow chandler.
In 1851 Edward and his son were documented as living at 60 East Road and Edward (jnr) died aged 18 years old in February 1855. His death was subject to an inquest which found that Edward George had been subject to fits for the previous three years which ‘had affected his mind’. On 30 January Edward (snr) had gone upstairs and left his son alone for a few minutes and had run down when he heard the noise of a falling chair. He found Edward George with his shirt on fire – once the fire had been put out he ‘found the the deceased was much burned; the father applied flour to the burn, which extended up the side to the chest. He afterwards applied linseed oil and lime water’. Edward had appeared to improve but got worse in the following days and evenutally died as a result of the burns. The inquest jury recorded a verdict of ‘accidental death’.
Edward died at East Road .
