Ernest grew up at 222 Newmarket Road, the son of tailor William Butcher (1843-) and Hester (née Carter) (1852-1937). In 1891, aged 15 Ernest was working as a grocer’s assistant. He married Annie Watts in 1897 and they had three daughters: Florence May (1899-1975), Violet Maud (1902-1973) and Doris Hatty (1906-1963). The family lived at 108 New Street and Ernest worked as a corn merchant’s assistant (1901) before moving to 52 Fitzroy Street (1911) and South Street (at least 1918 onwards). In 1911 he was working as a labourer in a jam factory. He served as a rifleman with the Royal Irish Rifles in the 1st World War and died aged 47 years old.
