George Buttress (1855 – 20 March 1927)

George was the son of bricklayer William Buttress and his wife Ann.  He grew up on Victoria Road and became a bricklayer like his father.  Aged 16 [1871] he was living at home at Bermuda Road and working as a bricklayer.  He married Lavinia Leach in 1880.

George and Lavinia had at least four sons: William Robert [1880-1903], George Alfred [1886-1966], Alfred [1888-] and Robert [1890-].

In 1901 the family were living at 1 St Paul’s Walk. In 1911 they were at 100 Sedgwick Street and George was out of work at this time.  He died aged 72 years old.

Lavinia Buttress  [nee Leach] (c.1858 – 23 December 1927)

Lavinia was born in Brandon in Suffolk.  She was the daughter of James and Ann Leach. James was a sawyer, and Ann a furrier and she grew up at Church Walk in Brandon. She married George Buttress in 1880.

Soon after marriage George appears to have been working away from home and in the 1881 census Lavinia is living with her parents and baby William at 4 Cambridge Place.  Her occupation at this time was charwoman.

She died the same year as her husband aged 69 years old.
