Gertrude Carruthers (née Neave) (1868 – 13 December 1901)
Gertrude was born in Chelmsford and was the daughter of Henry and Mary Ann Neave. She appears to have been known as Gertie through her life. She was baptised at St Mary the Virgin Church in Chelmsford on 2nd January 1869. Her father was an accountant/actuary who worked for a bank, and she grew up in Chelmsford at Broomfield Road (1871) and then at 75 High Street (1881). Aged 22 she had left home and was working as a drapers assistant in Braintree.
Gertie married fellow draper Douglas Carruthers at Marylebone Church in London on 16th July 1894. Douglas had been born in Bishops Stortford but was a proud Scotsman as his census records show – he called himself a ‘scotch draper’ (sic). At the time of his marriage Douglas was living in Colchester. Gertie and Douglas had one child – Douglas Arthur (1895-1979) who was also born in Colchester. By 1901 the family were living at 251 Mill Road where Douglas was running a drapers/outfitters store. Gertie died later that same year aged 33 years old.
Her husband Douglas stayed in Cambridge for a few years, and moved to 40 Tension Road. He married Martha Agnes Adkins (1867-) in 1911, and then emigrated to Canada in 1914 with Martha and his son Douglas (Jnr). He died in Sudbury, Ontario in November 1940.
