Mary Carter (nee Burges) (1796 – 8 July 1891)
Mary was born in Haddenham, near Ely and married Robert Carter (1794-1859) on 31 May 1825 in Doddington, Ely. Robert was a bricklayer and they had at least five children: Robert (1828-), Mary (1831-1917), Sarah (1835-1921), William (1837-) and Rebecca (1840-1922). They lived at Gloucester Place (1851) and Short Street, New Street. Robert died on Christmas Eve 1859 and was buried in the St. Andrew the Less area of Mill Road Cemetery, although it is not known if he was buried in the same grave as his wife and daughters.
After Robert’s death, Mary continued to live at Albert Street/ New Street with her daughter Sarah, who was a dressmaker . She died aged 95 and her funeral was held on 11 July.
Mary Kelley (nee Carter) (1831 – 20 November 1917)
Mary was baptised on Christmas Day 1832 at St. Giles’ Church and married widower Henry Kelley (1815-1870) on 21 December 1865 at Old Church, St. Pancras in London. Henry worked as an auctioneer and had two children from his first marriage. He and Mary had a son: Robert (1868-1949) and lived in London. Henry died aged 55 years old and was buried at Norwood Cemetery in August 1870
Mary continued to live in London until at least 1901 and lived with her son Robert. In 1901 she was running a Boarding House at 34 Woburn Place. She returned to Cambridge and in 1911 was living with her sister Sarah at Albert Street/New Street. She died at 10 Young Street, New Street, East Road.
Her surname was given as Kelley on documents of the time, it is not known why it was written without an ‘e’ on the grave monument (NB – Inscription requires checking)
Sarah Carter (1835 – 14 March 1921)
Sarah worked as a servant for Robert Ind when she was 16 years old (1851), but later worked as a dressmaker and lived with her mother until her death. She had retired by 1911 and is believed to have died in London.
Rebecca Dalgleish (nee Carter) (1840 – 27 January 1922)
Rebecca grew up at Gloucester Place and aged 21 was working as a servant at Regent Street for retired grocer William Shippey and his wife Mary Anne (1861). She later worked as a dressmaker and married baker John Virtue Dalgleish (1849-1894) on 20 June 1875 at St. Andrew’s Church, Holborn. John was Scottish and the couple lived at Seaton Street (1881) and Lamont Road (1891), both in Chelsea. They had at least five children: William (1876-1955), John (1878-1951), Robert (1880-), Thomas Virtue (1882-1960) and Harry Headley (1885-1885).
After she was widowed Rebecca continued to live at Lamont Road with her sons and took in lodgers (1891 to at least 1909). By 1911 she was living at 1 Meek Street, Chelsea with her son Thomas and a niece. Rebecca died in Cambridge aged 82 years old.
