Relationships: Sarah was the first wife of William. Edward was their son. Emma was William’s second wife.

Edward M. Cawthorn (c 1857 – 1876)

Edward was the eighth child of William and Sarah. He died at the family home in James Street.

Sarah Cawthorn (née Ling) (c 1819 – 1880)

Sarah was the daughter of John of Barton Mills, Suffolk. She married William at the church of St Andrew the Less on December 13th 1839 aged 20. Before her marriage she had been working as a servant. Her address in the parish marriage register was given as Fair Street.

She and William at least nine children:  Sarah Elizabeth (b 1842), William Henry (b 1844), James Ling (1847), Martin (1848 – 1849), Martin (1849 – 1852), Mary Ann (b 1853), Martin (1855 -1855), Edward Martin (b 1857) and F Charles (1858 – 1859).

A headstone for the four boys who died as infants can be found here.

William Cawthorn (1816 – 1893)

The son of Henry and Hannah Cawthorn[e], William was baptised on September 8th 1816 at the parish church of St Leonard in Little Downham, Ely.  His father Henry was a farmer.

In 1841 William and Sarah were living at 30 James Street. William was employed as a labourer. This may have been in the brewing industry as number 29 was the James Street Brewery. By 1851 he was listed as a brewer and the family were living at 11 James Street. Lodging with them was William Maltby, a labourer. Sometime during the next 10 years they all moved to 40 Gold Street (1861 census) but by 1871 were back in James Street at no 9. This was next door to the Rhadegund Brewery where he was employing two men. One of these was most likely William Maltby who was still living with them and listed as a brewer’s labourer.  William bought this brewery in 1877 and it remained in the family until 1909.*

William married Emma Glasscock on August 1st 1882. They had a son: Alfred (b 1882.) The family moved to High Street Chesterton where Henry died when his son was only 11.

Emma Cawthorn (née Glasscock) (16.4.1847 – ?)

Emma was the tenth child of John and Elizabeth Glasscock She was born and brought up in Fitzroy Street. John was a fishmonger and also ran a dairy business.  John and Elizabeth are buried somewhere in this parish but we have found no grave marker.

In 1855 the first of the family bereavements occurred when 15 year old Harriett died followed by the youngest child, Alfred, in 1857 and 6 months later the mother Elizabeth.

By 1861 John’s brother William, also a fishmonger, had moved in along with a nephew from Suffolk. The eldest daughter Elizabeth appeared to be keeping house and 2 sons were assisting in the family business.

Emma and her elder sister Martha were needlewomen in 1871.

When Emma married widower William Cawthorn in 1882 she was 35 years old, he was 66.
After William’s death she may have moved as we have not found a record of her remarrying and we have not found a local death date. Her son Alfred, his wife Charlotte and their 1 year old son Alfred were living in London in 1911.
