Jessie Edith Challis (née Stocker) (16 October 1886 – 18 September 1944)
Jessie was the youngest daughter of James and Eliza (née Witt). Her father died when she was six months old and she grew up with her widowed mother at 37 Broad Street (1901) and 2 Malcolm Place (1904 onwards. Eliza was a college servant and in 1911 Jessie was not noted as having any occupation. She married Thomas Challis in 1917 and they continued to live at 2 Malcolm Place. She died at the Leys Annex of Addenbrooke’s Hospital aged 57 years old.
Thomas Challis (1886 – 30 December 1953)
Thomas was born in Barrington, and was the son of Thomas and Jessie Ann Challis. He grew up at Back Lane in the village and his father was an agricultural labourer. By the age of 14 Thomas (jnr) was working as a grocer’s assistant and in 1911 was a general warehouseman, and lodging at 59 Bradmore Street in Cambridge. In 1939 he was documented as working in the ‘grocery department, packer and dispatcher wholesale’.
After he was widowed he went to live at Red House, Barrington, but died in Fulbourn aged 67 years old.
