It is not known when Sarah died, but John married for a second time on 17 June 1856 to Mary Clay at St Andrew’s Church, Holborn.  The couple had at least five children, all of whom were born in London: John Freeman (1857-1857), Eliza (1858-1925), Adelaide Mary (1861-1861), George Arthur (1866-1869) and William Henry. They lived in London until at least 1900 and John had a shop at 36 Charles Street, Hatton Garden.  By 1901 however they had moved to Cambridge and lived at 25 James Street with Mary Gates’ sister Eliza Clay.  John died at James Street aged 76 years old.

In 1911 the two sisters were living at James Street with Mary’s granddaughter Hilda Martha Moden (1896-1944 ) (the daughter of Eliza Jane). Eliza died three weeks after her sister Mary at 60 Burleigh Street, the home of Edward and Eliza Jane (née Gates) Moden.
