Charles Smith (1860- March 1928)
Charles was the son of William and Frances Smith and grew up at 29 New Street. His father was a labourer and aged 21 Charles was working as a bricklayers labourer. He married Emma (1861-) and in 1881 the couple were living at 79 New Street, where she was documented as being a charwoman. It is not known what happened to the marriage, but by 1891 he was living at 39 New Street with Fanny Day, who was documented as being a boarder and laundress. They had four children Fanny Elizabeth (1902-1947), Lily May (1910-1986) and two children who died as infants. There is no evidence of them having married, and it is believed he remained married to Emma. On the 1911 census and on the daughters’ marriage certificates his name was given as Charles Day, but on the 1921 census he was documented as Charles Smith. He died in March 1928 aged 68 years and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 31 March.
Fanny Day (22 January 1873 – April 1946)
Fanny was the daughter of John and Alice (née Odell) and was baptised at St. Andrew the Less Church on 26 June 1875. She grew up at 125 East Road with her eight siblings and her father was a brick maker. In 1939 she was living at 82 New Street with daughter Fanny and son-in-law Bertie Rich and was described as a widow. She died at home and her funeral was held at the Mill Road Cemetery Chapel on 12 April. It was reported in local newspapers that she was ‘buried in the family grave’.
