Inscription
In loving memory of Thomas Argent Sanders Christmas
who died October 25th 1896 aged 89 years
The eternal God is thy refuge. Deut. 33. c. 27.v.
Thomas Argent Sanders Christmas (c.1807‒1896)
Thomas was born c. 1807, apparently the son of Thomas Christmas, ironmonger of 6 Peas Hill, in central Cambridge, and his wife Ann Argent Christmas. (Thomas and Ann were married on 6 July 1805(?) at St Giles’s Church, Cambridge, Ann dying in 1839, aged 33 and Thomas in 1846, aged 64. Both are buried in St Edward’s churchyard in grave 161, within a few yards of their Peas Hill home.)
Thomas took over the Peas Hill ironmongery business, and in 1891 was still working there aged 83, unmarried, with a housekeeper.
Thomas died on 25 October 1896 at the age of 89, and was buried on the 29th of the month in Mill Road Cemetery, in row XXVIII of the St Edward parish area, in grave 3, at a depth of 8 feet.
(Other, younger members of the Christmas family are buried in this cemetery in the areas of Holy Trinity (Barrett and Mary Ann) and St Michael (Mary Ann and William).)
