George Clarke (16 October 1848 – 8 January 1895)
George was the son of John and Sarah Clarke and was born in Birmingham, but by the time he was three years old the family had moved to Adam and Eve Row, Cambridge. His father was a coach builder, and by 1871 the family were living at Gwydir Street where they ran a grocery shop. George worked as a boot clicker and married Mary Murdock on 31 December 1874 at Christ Church. The couple had at least eleven children: Millicent Mary (1875-1875), Minnie Florence (1876-1958), George Alfred (1878-1953), Mary Louisa (1880-1965), Lilian Maud (1882-1964), John Edward (1884-), Arthur William (1886-1936), Harry Charles (1888-1989), Frank Prime Murdock (1890-1973), Elsie May (1892-1893) and Grace Agnes (1894-1979). The family lived at 19 Gwydir Street and George continued to work as a shoe and boot clicker (someone who cuts the uppers for boots/shoes from leather). He died at home and his funeral was held on 14 January. Parish burial records show he was a non-conformist.
Mary Ann Clarke (née Murdock) (17 July 1854 – 17 February 1938)
Mary was born in Leicester and was named Mary Hannah at birth. Her middle name changed to Ann over time, although her death was registered under the name of Mary H Clarke. She was the daughter of hosiery warehouse worker George Murdock (1833-1893) and Mary (née Neal) (1843-1859). Mary was twenty when she married George Clarke and continued to live at 19 Gwydir Street after she was widowed. In 1901 she was working as a monthly sick nurse (i.e. a nurse who looked after newborn babies).
Mary Louisa Clarke (19 April 1880 – 22 August 1965)
Mary worked as a sewing maid at 2 Salisbury Villas, 23 Station Road (1911) before moving back to live at 19 Gwydir Street. In 1939 she was living there with her sister Minnie, who was documented as being incapacitiated. She died at home aged 85 years old.
George and Mary’s two infant daughters were also buried at the St. Andrew the Less area of Mill Road Cemetery. It isn’t known if the girls were buried in the same grave as their parents.
Millicent Mary Clarke (August 1875 – September 1875)
Millicent died at Eden Street aged 3 weeks old and was buried on 17 September 1875.
Elsie May Clarke (c.September 1892 – 14 June 1893)
Elsie died at 19 Gwydir Street aged 9 months old and was buried on 17 June 1893.
