Violet died at 17 Willow Place aged 15 years old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 18 January 1894.
Maria Coe (née Goodwin) (1840 – 23 April 1915)
Maria was born in Clavering, a village just south west of Saffron Walden and was baptised there on 22 March 1840. She was the daughter of James (1812-1854) and Eliza (née) Brown (1809-1882) and grew up in Clavering, where her father worked as an agricultural labourer. In 1861 she was living with her widowed mother and siblings and was working as a general servant. She married Henry (known as Jack) Coe on 24 February 1866 at St. Mary and St. Clement Church, Clavering and the couple had five children: Henry (1872-), Minnie (1874-1946), Matilda (1876-1950), Violet and one other child who died as an infant. The family lived at 33 Occupation Road (1871), 68 New Street (1881), 17 Willow Place (at least 1891-1894), 3a Brunswick Terrace (1901) and 54 Trumpington Street (1911). Jack worked as a labourer, coprolite digger (1881) and builders labourer. Maria died aged 75 years old and her husband and children placed in memorium adverts in local newspapers in the following years. In 1917 it read ‘In ever loving memory of our beloved wife and mother, Maria Coe, who passed away April 23rd, 1915. No one knows how much we miss her. Only aching hearts can tell; Earth has lost her. Heaven has gained her, Jesus hath done all things well – From her loved ones’.
Henry (‘Jack’) Coe (1847 – 24 August 1927)
Jack was born in Cambridge and was the son of James and Mary Ann Coe. His father was a labourer, and he grew up on Newmarket Road. Aged 14 Jack was also working as a labourer and married Maria Goodwin when he was c.19 years old. In 1927 he was living at 30a St Andrews Street with his widowed daughter Minnie, and died aged 80 years old. His Obituary noted that he ‘was one of the oldest members of the Cambridge Town Bowls Club. For upwards of thirty years he was a respected employee with Messrs. Thoday and subsequently Messrs. Negus’. At the funeral, members of the Bowls Club lined the Avenue of Limes as a mark of respect to him.
