Charles Cox (1854 – 14 June 1881)

Charles was the son of Alfred and Sarah Cox and grew up at 20 Burleigh Street, where his father was a shoe/boot maker. Charles worked as a bookbinder finisher (1871) and later as a cabinet maker. He married Elizabeth Chamberlain in 1880 and they had one son: Alfred Charles (1881-1949). Charles died at Proctor’s Buildings, Norfolk Street aged 27 years old.

Elizabeth Ann Cox (née Chamberlain) (1850 – 8 September 1926)

Elizabeth was born and raised in Melbourn, three miles north west of Royston.  She was the daughter of George and Mary (née Gouldthorp) Chamberlain and her father was an agricultural worker who died before she was 11 years old. Aged 21 Elizabeth was working as a general servant for Dennis and Louisa Hall at 2 Newnham, before marrying Charles Cox when she was 30 years old. After she was widowed she ran a Lodging House at  23 Maid’s Causeway (1901) and 37 Earl Street (1911).
