William Clements Cracknell (c. October 1868- 23 August 1871)
William was the son of William Thomas Cracknell (1838-1906) and Sarah (née Hard) (1844-1916). William was a college ‘gyp’ at St John’s College and the family lived at Albert Street. William drowned aged 2 years and 10 months old and an inquest was held into his death. He had been at home with his mother Sarah who had seen him at 4.15pm, but then ‘by some means got into the river (which ran about 200 yards off) and was drowned’. Butcher William Fordham pulled the child out of the river and anther passerby attempted to resuscitate him but to no avail. The jury returned an open verdict.
Williams brother James Wooton Cracknell is also buried at Mill Road Cemetery.
