Robert Crane (1835 – 29 October 1875)
Robert was born in Exning, near Newmarket and baptised there on 7 June 1835. He was the son of John and Mary Crane and married Annie Hopkins in Exning on 9 August 1857. The couple had at least six children: Robert John (1858-), Mary Ann Elizabeth (1860-), Alice (1865-), Laura (1870-1954), Arthur George (1873-1952) and Charles William (1874-1876). The eldest two children were born in Cambridge, but by 1861 the family were living in Lambeth where Robert worked as a labourer. They remained in Lambeth until at least 1865, when daughter Alice was born, but were living at 113 East Road, Cambridge in 1870. Robert worked as a labourer in a brewery and died at home aged 40 (although the grave monument states 39 years).
Anne (Annie) Crane (née Hopkins) (1835 – 23 September 1918)
Annie was the daughter of John and Mary (née Moore) Hopkins and grew up at 1 Gloucester Place, Cambridge. Her father was a labourer and she married Robert Crane when she was c.22 years old. After she was widowed Annie worked as a general dealer and lived at 92 East Road (1881) with her children. In 1901 she was working as a dressmaker and living by herself at 5 Abbey Walk. She later went to live with daughter Laura, who ran a Lodging House from 7 Park Street (at least 1911) and died at Park Street.
Arthur George (George) Crane (28 April 1873 – 16 December 1952)
George was baptised on 18 May 1873 and married Annie Elizabeth Barnes (1870-1948) in Royston in 1898. They had three children: Harold George (1900-1993) and two children who died as infants. George was working as a milk carrier in 1901 and the family lived at 10 Richmond Road, Chesterton. He later worked as an assistant fireman and they moved to live in Shirebrook, near Mansfield, Derbyshire (1911). From 1927 onwards George lived with his sister Laura at 7 Park Street, Annie meanwhile lived in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. In 1939 he was working as a porter in a ‘radio warehouse’.
Laura Crane (20 September 1870 – 31 May 1954)
Laura was baptised on 9 October 1870 at the Primitive Methodist Chapel. In 1901 she was working as a domestic servant for retired college servant Frederick Meadowcroft, who lived at 7 Park Street. She then ran a Lodging House from the address from at least 1911 to 1939.
Charles William Crane (September 1874 – 1 February 1876)
Charles was the youngest son of Robert and Annie Crane. He was baptised at the Primitive Methodist Chapel on 11 October 1874 and died at East Road aged 16 months old.
