Monument

This cross, in the parish area of St Edwards, was not found when we mapped the parish in 2017. The grave register places the grave 3 rows from the west wall towards the centre of the parish. This area is overgrown and inaccessible.

In Memory of JANET MARY DALE b January 1887

Janet Mary Dale (January 1887 – June 1887)

Janet was the second of the four daughters born to Alfred and Maria Dale.  She died in 1887 in Cambridge aged 5 months old.

Janet’s father was Alfred Witham Winterslow Dale [1885-1921].  He came up to Cambridge in 1875, and migrated to Trinity Hall, where he got his BA in the Classics Tripos [1st Class] in 1879.  He was a fellow of Trinity Hall from 1880-1899, and bursar from 1883.

He married Maria Jeeves, and they had four daughters:  Marjorie [1884-1963], Janet Mary [1887-1887], Beatrice Mary [1889-1980] and Alice Barbara [1891-1986].

Alfred Witham Dale was Principle of University College Liverpool [1899-1903], which later became the University of Liverpool, of which he was the First Vice Chancellor.  He was knighted in 1911. Dame Maria Dale died in Oxford in 1935.  Sir Alfred Dale died in Newbury aged 65 years old.
