Joshua Day (1 February 1829 – 1895)
Joshua was the son of Jospeh and Millicent (née Coxall) and was baptised on 31 May 1829 at the Wesleyan Chapel, Barnwell. He worked as a shopmsn to grocer/baker Mr Jay of St. Andrews’s Street and in January 1847 was sentenced to 8 months imprisonment for theft. He was accused of selling 7lbs of sugar to his brother John, which John only paid 2s and 3d for.
Joshua married Sarah Speed on 5 January 1853 at St. Mary’s Church in Lambeth. The couple had thirteen children: Agnes (1853-), Mary (11855-1937), Walter Thomas (1858-1941), Louisa (1860-1926), Charles Joshua (1862-1932), Caroline Esther (1864-1928), Eliza Mahala (1865-1954), Emma Maude (1867-1955), Anne Maria (1868-1937), Nellie (1874-1954) and a further three children who died as infants. They lived at 151 East Road and Joshua worked as a wheelwright. In September 1893 his son Walter was accused of assaulting Joshua. Joshua claimed that ‘his son flung him out of the house’. However Walter’s solicitor Mr Symonds, ‘proved that the old gentleman was a great nuisance and assaulted his son first, and the Magistrates dismissed the case’. Joshua died aged 67 years old.
Sarah Ann Day (née Speed) (1831 – 1918)
Sarah was born in Abington, eight miles south east of Cambridge and was the daughter of gamekeeper William and Rebecca (née Millington). Before marrying Joshua Day she worked as a domestic servant in Lambeth (1851). After she was widowed Sarah lived at 151 East Road with her children Walter and Ada, and worked as a shirtmaker (1901), but by 1911 was living by herself with servant Ada Long. She died aged 87 years old.
