In loving memory of MARIA the beloved wife of Dennis Greenwood
Who entered into rest October 18 1888 aged 60 years
Watch and pray ye therefore for ye
know not the day nor the hour in …
… the Son of man cometh.
Also In Loving Memory of DENNIS GREENWOOD who died March 21 1899 aged 74
Maria Greenwood née Blinco (1828 -18 October 1888)
Maria was born and brought up in Swaffham Bulbeck, the daughter of shepherd, Thomas Blinco and his wife Elizabeth. In 1841 she was living with her parents & 4 siblings in Town St. She had moved to Cambridge by 1851 where she worked as a house servant for draper William Baker AL178
She married baker Dennis Greenwood on June 30th 1851 at Great St Mary’s church, Cambridge.
They had at least 3 children: Dennis (c1855), Alfred (1861) and Dora (1864). All born in Butcher Row (Later renamed Guildhall St) in the parish of Mary the Great
Maria died at Jesus Lane aged 60.
Dennis Greenwood (c 1825 – March 1899)
Dennis was born in Cambridge. He was the son of baker Thomas Greenwood
In 1861 the family were living in Butcher Row with nephew John Martin Greenwood who was an errand boy and Mary Pegram, a 61 year old nurse, presumably there for the care of Maria and 1 month old Alfred.
In 1871 they were probably living in the same house, close to The Black Swan, The Lamb and The Red Cow, but Butcher Row was now called Guildhall St. By 1881 the family had moved to Rhadegund Buildings on Jesus Lane where they kept a lodging house.
When his daughter Dora married in 1890 Dennis was described as a ‘gent’
Dennis died at 6 Newmarket Rd age 74 and was buried on March 25th. He owned a considerable portfolio of property which was auctionned after his death, including 39 Paradise Street, 196 Victoria Road and three houses on Chesterton Road.
The epitaph seems to be taken from Luke 21.36, Mark 13.33 and Matthew 25.13
By Mary Naylor
